Drawing questions are marked on a short list of rules: clear continuous lines, no shading, correct proportions, a large drawing, and neat ruled label lines that touch what they name. Practise each rule on freshly drawn specimens, then measure a drawing to find its magnification.

Single, clear, continuous lines in sharp pencil, with outlines joined up and no sketching.
Show structures with outlines only.
A large drawing that uses most of the space, with parts in the right relative sizes and positions.
Ruled label lines that touch the structure, with no arrowheads, that do not cross, and labels written outside the drawing.
Magnification = drawing size ÷ actual size, with both in the same units.
The marking follows the conventions in published Cambridge mark schemes. The experiments, readings and wording on this page are our own.
