0610 IGCSE Biology/Topic 14 Coordination and response: hormones, homeostasis and tropic responses/6 interactive simulations/drag to rotate the 3D models

Hormones and homeostasis, made interactive

Six 3D simulations covering Topic 14.3 Hormones, 14.4 Homeostasis and 14.5 Tropic responses. Find the endocrine glands, trigger adrenaline, race a hormone against a nerve impulse, keep blood glucose and body temperature steady, and grow seedlings towards light and against gravity. Tabs marked Extended cover the Supplement.

1. Hormones and endocrine glands 3D · 14.3

A hormone is a chemical substance, produced by a gland and carried by the blood, which alters the activity of one or more specific target organs. Click a gland to see the hormone it secretes.

2. Adrenaline: fight or flight 3D · 14.3

When you are frightened or excited, the adrenal glands secrete adrenaline into the blood. It prepares the body for action. Trigger a fright and watch its effects.

3. Nervous and hormonal control 3D · 14.3

Both systems coordinate the body, but differently. Send a nerve impulse and a hormone at the same moment and compare how fast they act and how long the effect lasts.

4. Controlling blood glucose 3D · 14.4Extended

Homeostasis is the maintenance of a constant internal environment. Blood glucose is kept near a set point by negative feedback: the pancreas detects changes and secretes insulin or glucagon, and the liver responds. Eat a meal, exercise, or switch on Type 1 diabetes.

5. The skin and body temperature 3D · 14.4Extended

Mammals keep their core body temperature close to 37 °C. The brain monitors it and controls the skin's responses. Click the parts of the skin, then change the temperature of the surroundings.

6. Tropic responses 3D · 14.5

Plants respond to stimuli by growing towards or away from them. Phototropism is a response to the direction of light; gravitropism is a response to gravity. Set up the experiments and let the seedlings grow.

Hormones, homeostasis and tropisms is a free, browser-based simulation for Cambridge IGCSE Biology 0610 (topic 14 Coordination and response, sections 14.3 Hormones, 14.4 Homeostasis, 14.5 Tropic responses). The course is assessed in Paper 1/2 (Multiple choice), Paper 3/4 (Theory), Paper 5 (Practical Test), Paper 6 (Alternative to Practical). Syllabus for examination in 2026-2028. There are 6 tabs, each a self-contained experiment with its own controls and live readings, and nothing to install: it runs on a laptop, tablet or classroom projector.

  2. 2. Adrenaline: fight or flight. When you are frightened or excited, the adrenal glands secrete adrenaline into the blood.
  3. 3. Nervous and hormonal control. Both systems coordinate the body, but differently.
  4. 4. Controlling blood glucose. Homeostasis is the maintenance of a constant internal environment.
  5. 5. The skin and body temperature. Mammals keep their core body temperature close to 37 °C.
  6. 6. Tropic responses. Plants respond to stimuli by growing towards or away from them.
  7. The buttons at the end of the tab strip give the scene the whole window (Full screen, Hide controls) and, on a dark stage, a projector-friendly palette (Light scene). Many scenes also have drag handles: drag them to change the set-up directly.
