Human influences on ecosystems, made interactive

Seven 3D simulations covering Topic 20.1 Food supply, 20.2 Habitat destruction, 20.3 Pollution and 20.4 Conservation. Farm a field, clear a forest, pollute a lake, watch plastic last for a century, warm the planet, manage a fishery and save an endangered species. Tabs marked Extended cover the Supplement.

1. Increasing food production 3D · 20.1

Farmers use machinery, chemicals and selective breeding to grow more food. Switch each method on and watch the yield, then compare a monoculture with intensive livestock production.

2. Habitat destruction: deforestation 3D · 20.2

Forests are cleared for housing, crops, livestock and natural resources. Clear the forest and let it rain.

3. Eutrophication 3D · 20.3Extended

Excess fertiliser or untreated sewage washes into a lake. Follow the chain of events over the following weeks.

4. Non-biodegradable plastics 3D · 20.3

Biodegradable waste is broken down by decomposers; most plastics are not. Let the years pass and see what is left on the beach and in the sea.

5. The enhanced greenhouse effect 3D · 20.3

Carbon dioxide and methane in the atmosphere absorb heat radiated by the Earth. Add more of these gases and watch the temperature.

6. Sustainable fishing 3D · 20.4Extended

A sustainable resource is produced as fast as it is removed, so it does not run out. Set the fishing effort and the conservation measures, then fish for 30 years.

7. Endangered species and conservation 3D · 20.4

Each animal carries two alleles for many genes; the colours stand for the different alleles in the population. Let the population crash, then try to save it.

Human influences on ecosystems is a free, browser-based simulation for Cambridge IGCSE Biology 0610 (topic 20 Human influences on ecosystems). The course is assessed in Paper 1/2 (Multiple choice), Paper 3/4 (Theory), Paper 5 (Practical Test), Paper 6 (Alternative to Practical). Syllabus for examination in 2026-2028. There are 7 tabs, each a self-contained experiment with its own controls and live readings, and nothing to install: it runs on a laptop, tablet or classroom projector.

How to use this simulation

  1. 1. Increasing food production. Farmers use machinery, chemicals and selective breeding to grow more food.
  2. 2. Habitat destruction: deforestation. Forests are cleared for housing, crops, livestock and natural resources.
  3. 3. Eutrophication. Excess fertiliser or untreated sewage washes into a lake.
  4. 4. Non-biodegradable plastics. Biodegradable waste is broken down by decomposers; most plastics are not.
  5. 5. The enhanced greenhouse effect. Carbon dioxide and methane in the atmosphere absorb heat radiated by the Earth.
  6. 6. Sustainable fishing. A sustainable resource is produced as fast as it is removed, so it does not run out.
  7. 7. Endangered species and conservation. Each animal carries two alleles for many genes; the colours stand for the different alleles in the population.
  8. The buttons at the end of the tab strip give the scene the whole window (Full screen, Hide controls) and, on a dark stage, a projector-friendly palette (Light scene). Many scenes also have drag handles: drag them to change the set-up directly.
