0610 IGCSE Biology/Topic 7 Human nutrition/5 interactive simulations/drag to rotate the 3D models

Human nutrition, made interactive

Five 3D simulations covering Topic 7: diet (7.1), the digestive system (7.2), physical digestion (7.3), chemical digestion (7.4) and absorption (7.5). Extended content on bile, pepsin, trypsin, maltase and villi is included.

1. A balanced diet 3D · 7.1

A balanced diet contains all the nutrients in the right amounts: carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, mineral ions, fibre and water. Fill the plate with a day's food and compare it with what a teenager needs. Too little of something causes a deficiency disease.

2. The digestive system 3D · 7.2

Food passes along the alimentary canal from mouth to anus. On the way it is ingested, digested, absorbed into the blood and assimilated by cells, and what cannot be digested is egested as faeces. Click any organ, or follow a mouthful of food.

3. Teeth and physical digestion 3D · 7.3

Physical digestion breaks food into smaller pieces without changing the molecules, giving a larger surface area for enzymes to work on. Teeth start the job and the muscular stomach wall continues it by churning. Explore the four kinds of teeth, then look inside one.

4. Chemical digestion 3D · 7.4

Enzymes break large insoluble molecules into small soluble molecules that can be absorbed. Visit each part of the gut to see which enzymes act there, at what pH, and what they produce. Extended content covers pepsin, trypsin, maltase and bile.

5. Absorption and villi 3D · 7.5Extended

Digested nutrients are absorbed in the small intestine, and most water too (some more in the colon). Its lining is folded into millions of villi, and the cells covering each villus carry microvilli, giving an enormous surface area. Each villus has capillaries and a lacteal to carry the nutrients away.

About this lab: Human nutrition

Five interactive 3D simulations for Cambridge IGCSE Biology 0610 topic 7 Human nutrition: build a balanced diet on a 3D plate with nutrient bars and deficiency warnings, a clickable 3D digestive system with a mouthful of food travelling through it, the four types of teeth and a cut-away molar, chemical digestion by amylase, proteases, lipase, maltase, acid and bile in the mouth, stomach, duodenum and ileum, and villi, microvilli, capillaries and lacteals absorbing nutrients.

Five 3D simulations covering Topic 7: diet (7.1), the digestive system (7.2), physical digestion (7.3), chemical digestion (7.4) and absorption (7.5). Extended content on bile, pepsin, trypsin, maltase and villi is included.

Human nutrition is a free, browser-based simulation for Cambridge IGCSE Biology 0610 (topic 7 Human nutrition). The course is assessed in Paper 1/2 (Multiple choice), Paper 3/4 (Theory), Paper 5 (Practical Test), Paper 6 (Alternative to Practical). Syllabus for examination in 2026-2028. There are 5 tabs, each a self-contained experiment with its own controls and live readings, and nothing to install: it runs on a laptop, tablet or classroom projector.

How to use this simulation

  1. 1. A balanced diet. A balanced diet contains all the nutrients in the right amounts: carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, mineral ions...
  2. 2. The digestive system. Food passes along the alimentary canal from mouth to anus.

  4. 4. Chemical digestion. Enzymes break large insoluble molecules into small soluble molecules that can be absorbed.
  5. 5. Absorption and villi. Digested nutrients are absorbed in the small intestine, and most water too (some more in the colon).
  6. The buttons at the end of the tab strip give the scene the whole window (Full screen, Hide controls) and, on a dark stage, a projector-friendly palette (Light scene). Many scenes also have drag handles: drag them to change the set-up directly.
