Databases and SQL

IGCSE Computer Science 0478, topic 9, and A-Level 9618, topic 8. Fields, records, data types and primary keys, SQL queries with a real query engine, predicting query output, then relational databases with joins and referential integrity, normalisation and SQL DDL and DML for A-Level.

About this lab: Databases and SQL

Interactive simulation for Cambridge IGCSE Computer Science 0478 topic 9 and AS & A Level 9618 topic 8: explore fields, records, data types and primary keys, run SQL queries with SELECT, FROM, WHERE, ORDER BY, SUM and COUNT and see which records match, predict query output, then join related tables, test referential integrity, normalise to third normal form and use CREATE TABLE, ALTER TABLE, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, GROUP BY and AVG.

Databases and SQL is a free, browser-based simulation for Cambridge IGCSE Computer Science 0478 (topic 9 Databases). The same lab serves both Cambridge IGCSE Computer Science 0478 and AS & A Level Computer Science 9618; tabs marked A-Level go beyond the IGCSE syllabus. The course is assessed in Paper 1 (Computer Systems), Paper 2 (Algorithms, Programming and Logic). Syllabus for examination in 2026-2028. There are 6 tabs, each a self-contained experiment with its own controls and live readings, and nothing to install: it runs on a laptop, tablet or classroom projector.

How to use this simulation

  1. 1. Tables, fields, records.
  2. 2. SQL queries.
  3. 3. What will it output?
  4. 4. Relational databases.
  5. 5. Normalisation.
  6. 6. DDL and DML.
  7. The buttons at the end of the tab strip give the scene the whole window (Full screen, Hide controls) and, on a dark stage, a projector-friendly palette (Light scene). Many scenes also have drag handles: drag them to change the set-up directly.
