9700 AS Level Biology/Topic 10 Infectious diseases/5 interactive simulations/drag to rotate the 3D models

Infectious diseases, made interactive

Five 3D simulations covering Topic 10.1 Infectious diseases and 10.2 Antibiotics. Meet the pathogens, follow their routes of transmission, control an outbreak, burst a bacterium with penicillin and slow the spread of resistance.

1. The pathogens 3D · 10.1

Infectious diseases are caused by pathogens and can be passed from one person to another. Meet the four pathogens in the syllabus.

2. How they are transmitted 3D · 10.1

Each disease spreads in its own way. Pick a disease and watch the route of transmission.

Disease

3. Prevention and control 3D · 10.1

Choose a disease and the control measures, then run an outbreak in a community of 200 people. Every measure has biological, social and economic costs and limits.

Measures

4. How penicillin works 3D · 10.2

Penicillin stops bacteria building the cross-links in their peptidoglycan cell walls. Add it to a growing bacterium, then try it on a virus.

5. Antibiotic resistance 3D · 10.2

Every use of an antibiotic selects for resistant bacteria. Switch on the steps that reduce the impact and run 20 years of antibiotic use in a hospital.

About this lab: Infectious diseases

Five interactive 3D simulations for Cambridge AS Level Biology 9700 topic 10 Infectious diseases: the pathogens that cause cholera, malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS, how each disease is transmitted, an outbreak model with control measures and their biological, social and economic factors, how penicillin acts on growing bacteria and why antibiotics do not affect viruses, and the rise of antibiotic resistance with the steps that reduce it.

Infectious diseases is a free, browser-based simulation for Cambridge International AS & A Level Biology 9700 (topic 10 Infectious diseases). The course is assessed in Paper 1 (Multiple choice), Paper 2 (AS structured), Paper 3 (Advanced practical), Paper 4 (A Level structured), Paper 5 (Planning, analysis, evaluation). Syllabus for examination in 2025-2027. There are 5 tabs, each a self-contained experiment with its own controls and live readings, and nothing to install: it runs on a laptop, tablet or classroom projector.

How to use this simulation

  1. 1. The pathogens. Infectious diseases are caused by pathogens and can be passed from one person to another.
  2. 2. How they are transmitted. Each disease spreads in its own way.
  3. 3. Prevention and control. Choose a disease and the control measures, then run an outbreak in a community of 200 people.
  4. 4. How penicillin works. Penicillin stops bacteria building the cross-links in their peptidoglycan cell walls.
  5. 5. Antibiotic resistance. Every use of an antibiotic selects for resistant bacteria.
  6. The buttons at the end of the tab strip give the scene the whole window (Full screen, Hide controls) and, on a dark stage, a projector-friendly palette (Light scene). Many scenes also have drag handles: drag them to change the set-up directly.
