Kinematics

Motion graphs, the equations of motion, projectiles in three dimensions, and measuring g

AS Level Physics 9702 · 2 Kinematics

About this lab: Kinematics

Displacement, velocity and acceleration graphs linked by gradient and area, strobed free fall with a suvat solver, projectile motion in 3D with its ground shadow, vertical twin and air resistance, the free-fall experiment to measure g from an h against t-squared graph, and the monkey-and-hunter, aircraft-drop and range-against-angle problems.

Motion graphs, the equations of motion, projectiles in three dimensions, and measuring g

Kinematics is a free, browser-based simulation for Cambridge International AS & A Level Physics 9702 (topic 2 Kinematics). The course is assessed in Paper 1 (multiple choice), Paper 2 (AS structured), Paper 3 (advanced practical), Paper 4 (A Level structured) and Paper 5 (planning, analysis and evaluation). There are 6 tabs, each a self-contained experiment with its own controls and live readings, and nothing to install: it runs on a laptop, tablet or classroom projector.

How to use this simulation

  1. 1. Linear motion and graphs.
  2. 2. Equations of motion.
  3. 3. Projectile motion (3D).
  4. 4. Measuring g.
  5. 5. Projectile problems.
  6. 6. Exam scenarios.
  7. The buttons at the end of the tab strip give the scene the whole window (Full screen, Hide controls) and, on a dark stage, a projector-friendly palette (Light scene). Many scenes also have drag handles: drag them to change the set-up directly.
