Scatter diagrams

IGCSE Mathematics 0580, topic 9.5. Positive, negative and no correlation, outliers, correlation and cause, and a line of best fit drawn by eye and used to estimate.

About this lab: Scatter diagrams

Interactive simulation for Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 topic 9.5: drag the crosses of real-looking data sets to see strong, weak, positive, negative and no correlation, spot an outlier, see why correlation does not prove cause, then draw a line of best fit by eye with feedback on points above and below and the mean point, and use it to estimate values, with a warning when you extrapolate outside the data.

Scatter diagrams is a free, browser-based simulation for Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 (topic 9 Statistics, section 9.5 Scatter diagrams). The course is assessed in Paper 1 (Core non-calculator), Paper 2 (Extended non-calculator), Paper 3 (Core calculator), Paper 4 (Extended calculator). Syllabus for examination in 2025-2027. There are 2 tabs, each a self-contained experiment with its own controls and live readings, and nothing to install: it runs on a laptop, tablet or classroom projector.

How to use this simulation

  1. 1. Correlation.
  2. 2. Line of best fit.
  3. The buttons at the end of the tab strip give the scene the whole window (Full screen, Hide controls) and, on a dark stage, a projector-friendly palette (Light scene). Many scenes also have drag handles: drag them to change the set-up directly.
