Interactive Simulator · Balance the Beam

The Turning Effect

A load hangs on the left of a pivoted beam. Place your weight on the right and slide it until the beam balances. The turning effect of a force, its moment, is the force multiplied by its perpendicular distance from the pivot. The beam balances when the anticlockwise moment on one side equals the clockwise moment on the other.

Mission Balance a 4 N load sitting 2.0 m left of the pivot. Round 1Streak 0Best 0
With these settings the beam will tip:
anticlockwise moment, left8.0 N m
clockwise moment, right6.0 N m
moment = force × distance. Balance needs left moment = right moment.
