Heat a solid steadily and its temperature climbs, but at the melting point it stalls: the energy now goes into breaking the bonds that hold the solid together, not into raising the temperature. The same flat step happens again at the boiling point. Those plateaus are the latent heat. Turning up the heater steepens the slopes but never moves the melting or boiling temperatures.
MissionHeat the substance and watch the two plateaus, then judge what happens during a change of state.Streak 0Best 0
While the substance is changing state, its temperature:
temperature-20 °C
what is happeningheating the solid
during melting and boiling the energy breaks bonds, so the temperature holds steady.
