Interactive Simulator · Balance the Planet

Thermal Energy Balance

A planet settles at the temperature where the energy it absorbs from sunlight equals the energy it radiates back to space. Bright ice reflects sunlight away before it can warm the surface, which cools the planet. Greenhouse gases trap some of the outgoing infrared, which warms it. Adjust the three controls to hit the target temperature.

Mission Tune the planet to a steady 15 °C. Round 1Streak 0Best 0
Adding more ice makes the planet:
energy absorbed238 W/m²
reflected by ice (albedo)0.30
equilibrium temperature15 °C
at balance, energy in equals energy out, which sets the temperature.
