Voltage is energy per coulomb. The cell gives each coulomb a push, the e.m.f., and the charge drops that energy as a p.d. across each component on the way round. Because energy is conserved, the p.d.s add up to the e.m.f. Read off the values, predict what a voltmeter would show, then connect it (in parallel) to check.

Voltmeter will read:
Use energy conservation: the e.m.f. equals the sum of the p.d.s.

e.m.f. = V(lamp 1) + V(lamp 2). A voltmeter is connected in parallel.
