Each job needs a temporary magnet (one you can switch off), a permanent magnet (one that stays), or something that never becomes magnetic at all. Pick a material and switch on the magnetising current in the coil. Watch the tiny magnets inside line up and the paper clips start to cling, then switch the current off. Soft iron lines up easily but falls back to a jumble the moment the field goes. Steel is harder to line up, but it holds. Copper has nothing to line up.
