A wire with a current flowing has a magnetic field wrapped around it. Coil the wire up and the field becomes just like a bar magnet, strong enough to lift cars in a scrapyard. Turn the current up, add more turns, or slip an iron bar inside, and the field grows. Reverse the current and the whole field flips. Build the field strength up to the target mark.

A coil makes a stronger field with more current and more turns. A soft-iron core makes it much stronger: that is an electromagnet.
