Interactive Simulator · Fission and Fusion

Split It, or Join It

There are two ways to release huge amounts of energy from the nucleus. Fission splits a heavy nucleus into two lighter ones when it swallows a neutron, and the spare neutrons can split even more: a chain reaction, used in power stations. Fusion joins two light nuclei into a heavier one, which is what powers the Sun. Try both.
