Paper 3 · Biological drawing

Draw what you see. Earn every line.

9700 Paper 3 asks for low-power plan diagrams of tissues and high-power drawings of cells, both marked on strict conventions. Practise spotting errors, placing label lines that touch the right tissue, choosing the best drawing, and calculating magnification with micrometres.

What examiners look for

Plan diagrams

Outlines of the tissue areas only, in the correct proportions, with no individual cells drawn.

High-power drawings

A few adjacent cells drawn accurately, with plant cell walls shown as two lines.

Quality of line

Single, clear, continuous lines with no shading and no gaps.

Labels

Ruled lines touching the tissue or structure, not crossing, with labels outside the drawing.

Magnification

Drawing size ÷ actual size, converting millimetres to micrometres (× 1000) first.

Habits that save marks

The marking follows the conventions in published Cambridge mark schemes. The experiments, readings and wording on this page are our own.
