A-Level Mathematics 9709 · 2026 / 2027 Syllabus

The full syllabus, mapped.

All six components of Cambridge AS & A Level Mathematics 9709, section by section. AS takes Pure 1 with Pure 2, Mechanics or Statistics 1; A Level adds Pure 3 and a second applied paper. Lessons built around worked examples are arriving component by component.

AS components: Papers 1, 2, 4 and 5.

AS Level = Paper 1 with one of Paper 2 (pure only), Paper 4 (mechanics) or Paper 5 (statistics).

Pure 1 is compulsory for every route
PAPER 1AS

Pure Mathematics 1.

The AS pure core that every route takes: quadratics, functions, coordinate geometry, radians, trigonometry, series, and first calculus.

PAPER 2AS only

Pure Mathematics 2.

The AS pure-only route (Papers 1 and 2, cannot carry forward to A Level). Every Paper 2 section is part of Pure Mathematics 3, so these lessons are shared with Paper 3.

PAPER 4AS

Mechanics.

Particles under forces: equilibrium and friction, kinematics in a straight line, momentum, Newton's laws, and work, energy and power.

PAPER 5AS

Probability & Statistics 1.

Representing data, permutations and combinations, probability, discrete random variables including binomial and geometric, and the normal distribution.

A Level components: Papers 3 and 6.

A Level = Papers 1 and 3 with either Papers 4 and 5, or Papers 5 and 6.

Pure 3 and Probability & Statistics 2
PAPER 3A Level

Pure Mathematics 3.

The A Level pure paper: algebra and partial fractions, logarithms, further trigonometry and calculus, numerical methods, 3D vectors, differential equations and complex numbers.

PAPER 6A Level

Probability & Statistics 2.

The Poisson distribution, linear combinations of random variables, continuous random variables, sampling and confidence intervals, and hypothesis tests.

6.2Linear combinations of random variables
