Paper 3 · Titration

Find the end point. Record it properly.

The titration in 9701 Paper 3 is marked on accuracy as well as method: your mean titre is compared with the supervisor’s. Run the burette yourself and stop at the colour change, then practise readings to 0.05 cm³, concordant titres, indicators and calculations. Fresh numbers every time, with worked solutions.

What examiners look for

Burette readings

Every reading recorded to the nearest 0.05 cm³: two decimal places, ending in 0 or 5.

Results table

Initial and final readings and titres, with headings and units, for a rough and at least two accurate titrations.

Concordant titres

Two accurate titres within 0.10 cm³ of each other, ticked and used for the mean.

Mean titre

The mean of the concordant titres only, to two decimal places.

Calculations

Moles from the titre, the mole ratio from the equation (including redox ratios such as MnO₄⁻ : Fe²⁺ = 1 : 5), and the answer to three significant figures.

Habits that save marks

The marking follows the conventions in published Cambridge mark schemes. The experiments, readings and wording on this page are our own.
