Extended. Six original Cambridge-style questions on column vectors: writing, combining and scaling them, ending with a boat crossing a current.
\(A\) is the point \((-3, 2)\) and \(B\) is the point \((1, -4)\). Write as column vectors (a) \(\overrightarrow{AB}\) (b) \(\overrightarrow{BA}\).
\(\mathbf{a} = \begin{pmatrix}5\\-2\end{pmatrix}\) and \(\mathbf{b} = \begin{pmatrix}-1\\3\end{pmatrix}\). Find (a) \(\mathbf{a} + \mathbf{b}\) (b) \(\mathbf{a} - \mathbf{b}\).
With \(\mathbf{a}\) and \(\mathbf{b}\) as in the previous question, find \(3\mathbf{a} - 2\mathbf{b}\).
Find \(p\) and \(q\) when \(p\begin{pmatrix}3\\-1\end{pmatrix} + q\begin{pmatrix}1\\2\end{pmatrix} = \begin{pmatrix}7\\7\end{pmatrix}\).
Show that the vectors \(\begin{pmatrix}10\\-4\end{pmatrix}\) and \(\begin{pmatrix}-15\\6\end{pmatrix}\) are parallel, and state whether they point the same way.
A boat would move by \(\begin{pmatrix}5\\2\end{pmatrix}\) km each hour in still water. A current moves it by \(\begin{pmatrix}-1\\2\end{pmatrix}\) km each hour. The boat starts at the origin.
(a) Find the boat's actual movement each hour as a column vector.
(b) Find its position after 3 hours.
(c) How many hours does it take to reach the buoy at \((20, 20)\)?
Mark this once you have attempted all six and checked your working. It records a Practiced badge on the topic and adds a one-time bonus. Revealing the solutions alone does not count.
