Biotechnology and genetic modification, made interactive

Seven 3D simulations covering Topic 21.1 to 21.3. Grow bacteria, raise dough, extract juice, wash a stained cloth, make lactose-free milk, run a fermenter and build a recombinant plasmid. Tabs marked Extended cover the Supplement.

1. Why use bacteria? 3D · 21.1

Bacteria reproduce very quickly and can make complex molecules. Start with one bacterium and let it divide every 20 minutes.

2. Yeast: bread and biofuel 3D · 21.2

Yeast respires anaerobically: glucose → ethanol + carbon dioxide. Bakers use the carbon dioxide; biofuel producers use the ethanol.

3. Pectinase and fruit juice 3D · 21.2

Pectin holds plant cell walls together. Pectinase breaks it down so more juice is released and the juice is clearer. Compare apple pulp with and without the enzyme.

4. Biological washing powders 3D · 21.2

Biological powders contain enzymes that digest stains. Wash a cloth stained with egg (protein), butter (fat) and gravy (starch) at different temperatures.

5. Lactose-free milk 3D · 21.2Extended

Some people cannot digest lactose, the sugar in milk. Milk is passed over the enzyme lactase, which breaks lactose into glucose and galactose.

6. Fermenters 3D · 21.2Extended

Fermenters grow bacteria and fungi on a large scale. Choose a product, click the parts, and see what happens when a condition is not controlled.

7. Genetic modification 3D · 21.3

Genetic modification changes the genetic material of an organism by removing, changing or inserting individual genes. Step through how bacteria are made to produce human insulin, then look at GM crops.

Biotechnology and genetic modification is a free, browser-based simulation for Cambridge IGCSE Biology 0610 (topic 21 Biotechnology and genetic modification). The course is assessed in Paper 1/2 (Multiple choice), Paper 3/4 (Theory), Paper 5 (Practical Test), Paper 6 (Alternative to Practical). Syllabus for examination in 2026-2028. There are 7 tabs, each a self-contained experiment with its own controls and live readings, and nothing to install: it runs on a laptop, tablet or classroom projector.

How to use this simulation

  1. 1. Why use bacteria? Bacteria reproduce very quickly and can make complex molecules.
  2. 2. Yeast: bread and biofuel. Yeast respires anaerobically: glucose → ethanol + carbon dioxide.
  3. 3. Pectinase and fruit juice. Pectin holds plant cell walls together.
  4. 4. Biological washing powders. Biological powders contain enzymes that digest stains.
  5. 5. Lactose-free milk. Some people cannot digest lactose, the sugar in milk.
  6. 6. Fermenters. Fermenters grow bacteria and fungi on a large scale.
  7. 7. Genetic modification. Genetic modification changes the genetic material of an organism by removing, changing or inserting individual genes.
  8. The buttons at the end of the tab strip give the scene the whole window (Full screen, Hide controls) and, on a dark stage, a projector-friendly palette (Light scene). Many scenes also have drag handles: drag them to change the set-up directly.
