Seven 3D simulations covering Topic 21.1 to 21.3. Grow bacteria, raise dough, extract juice, wash a stained cloth, make lactose-free milk, run a fermenter and build a recombinant plasmid. Tabs marked Extended cover the Supplement.
Bacteria reproduce very quickly and can make complex molecules. Start with one bacterium and let it divide every 20 minutes.
Yeast respires anaerobically: glucose → ethanol + carbon dioxide. Bakers use the carbon dioxide; biofuel producers use the ethanol.
Pectin holds plant cell walls together. Pectinase breaks it down so more juice is released and the juice is clearer. Compare apple pulp with and without the enzyme.
Biological powders contain enzymes that digest stains. Wash a cloth stained with egg (protein), butter (fat) and gravy (starch) at different temperatures.
Some people cannot digest lactose, the sugar in milk. Milk is passed over the enzyme lactase, which breaks lactose into glucose and galactose.
Fermenters grow bacteria and fungi on a large scale. Choose a product, click the parts, and see what happens when a condition is not controlled.
Genetic modification changes the genetic material of an organism by removing, changing or inserting individual genes. Step through how bacteria are made to produce human insulin, then look at GM crops.
Seven interactive 3D simulations for Cambridge IGCSE Biology 0610 topic 21 Biotechnology and genetic modification: why bacteria are useful, yeast in bread-making and biofuel production, pectinase in fruit juice production, biological washing powders, lactase and lactose-free milk, a fermenter for insulin, penicillin and mycoprotein with its controlled conditions, and the steps of genetically modifying bacteria to make human insulin, with GM crops.

Biotechnology and genetic modification is a free, browser-based simulation for Cambridge IGCSE Biology 0610 (topic 21 Biotechnology and genetic modification). The course is assessed in Paper 1/2 (Multiple choice), Paper 3/4 (Theory), Paper 5 (Practical Test), Paper 6 (Alternative to Practical). Syllabus for examination in 2026-2028. There are 7 tabs, each a self-contained experiment with its own controls and live readings, and nothing to install: it runs on a laptop, tablet or classroom projector.
