Cumulative frequency and histograms

IGCSE Mathematics 0580, topics 9.6 and 9.7 (Extended). Cumulative frequency curves with the median, quartiles, interquartile range and percentiles, and histograms with unequal class widths and frequency density.

About this lab: Cumulative frequency and histograms

Interactive simulation for Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 topics 9.6 and 9.7: build a cumulative frequency table and curve from grouped data, read the median, quartiles, interquartile range, any percentile and how many are above a value, then draw histograms with unequal class widths using frequency density, see why plotting frequency misleads, and estimate how many lie in a range from the areas of the bars.

Cumulative frequency and histograms is a free, browser-based simulation for Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 (topic 9 Statistics, sections 9.6 Cumulative frequency diagrams (Extended), 9.7 Histograms (Extended)). The course is assessed in Paper 1 (Core non-calculator), Paper 2 (Extended non-calculator), Paper 3 (Core calculator), Paper 4 (Extended calculator). Syllabus for examination in 2025-2027. There are 2 tabs, each a self-contained experiment with its own controls and live readings, and nothing to install: it runs on a laptop, tablet or classroom projector.

How to use this simulation

  1. 1. Cumulative frequency.
  2. 2. Histograms.
  3. The buttons at the end of the tab strip give the scene the whole window (Full screen, Hide controls) and, on a dark stage, a projector-friendly palette (Light scene). Many scenes also have drag handles: drag them to change the set-up directly.
