Shells split into sub-shells, sub-shells into orbitals, and every orbital holds two electrons. Learn the filling order once and you can write the configuration of any of the first 36 elements and their ions.
Shell n holds s, p, d and f sub-shells up to n of them; an s sub-shell has one orbital, p has three, d has five, and each orbital holds two electrons with opposite spins. Sub-shells fill in order of increasing energy, 1s 2s 2p 3s 3p 4s 3d 4p, so 4s fills before 3d. Within a sub-shell, electrons occupy orbitals singly before pairing. Chromium and copper break the pattern to give half-filled and full 3d sub-shells.
Rotate the 3D orbitals in the simulator. Notice that an s orbital is a sphere while the three p orbitals are dumbbells pointing along x, y and z. Each is a region where the electron is most likely to be found.
| Shell n | Sub-shells | Orbitals | Max electrons |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1s | 1 | 2 |
| 2 | 2s, 2p | 1 + 3 | 8 |
| 3 | 3s, 3p, 3d | 1 + 3 + 5 | 18 |
| 4 | 4s, 4p, 4d, 4f | 1 + 3 + 5 + 7 | 32 |
Within one shell the sub-shell energies rise in the order s < p < d < f. Between shells the gaps shrink, and by n = 3 the 3d sub-shell sits slightly above 4s. That single overlap explains everything odd about the first row of transition elements.
Use the configuration builder to fill electrons one at a time. Watch where the 19th electron goes for potassium, and what happens at chromium and copper.
Four quick checks. Each correct answer earns XP and records this skill on your profile.
The maximum number of electrons in a p sub-shell is:
The shape of a 2p orbital is:
The electron configuration of a sulfur atom (Z = 16) is:
Which sub-shell is filled immediately after 4s?
Cations lose electrons from the highest energy occupied sub-shell; anions add electrons to the lowest available one.
4s is filled before 3d and emptied before 3d. Writing Fe2+ as [Ar] 3d4 4s2 is the classic error. And chromium is 3d5 4s1, not 3d4 4s2; copper is 3d10 4s1, not 3d9 4s2.
Unlocks once the four checks above are done. Worth more XP, written to AS Paper 1 and Paper 2 standard.
The electron configuration of a chromium atom (Z = 24) is:
The electron configuration of an Fe2+ ion is:
How many unpaired electrons are there in a nitrogen atom?
Which species has the electron configuration 1s22s22p63s23p6?
