9701 AS Chemistry/ Topic 1 Atomic Structure/ 8 interactive simulations/ drag to rotate 3D scenes

Atomic Structure, made interactive

Eight simulations covering the whole of Topic 1: particles and the nucleus (1.1, 1.2) and electron energy levels (1.3). Rotate the 3D scenes with drag, zoom with the wheel or pinch. Everything updates live as you change the controls.

1. Atom and ion builder 3D · 1.1 / 1.2

Add or remove protons, neutrons and electrons and watch the identity of the atom change. Electrons fill shells on the 2, 8, 8, 2 pattern used for Bohr diagrams up to calcium.

2. Isotopes and relative atomic mass 2D · 1.1

A mass spectrum is a bar chart of isotope abundance. Drag the abundance sliders and the weighted mean, the relative atomic mass, recalculates in real time.

RELATIVE ATOMIC MASS (Ar)
35.5
Ar = Σ(isotope mass × %abundance) / 100

3. Orbital shapes: s, p and d 3D · 1.3

The regions where an electron is most likely to be found. Rotate each orbital to see its true geometry. Lobe colours show the two phases of the wavefunction (+ and −), which is why p and d orbitals point in specific directions.

4. Electron configuration and the Aufbau order interactive · 1.3

Fill subshells one electron at a time in order of increasing energy. Watch 4s fill before 3d, and see electrons pair only after each orbital in a subshell has one (Hund's rule). Arrows show electron spin.

5. Successive ionisation energies 3D + graph · 1.3

Strip electrons off one at a time. Each removal is plotted as log(ionisation energy). The big jumps in the graph line up with the moment you break into a new, inner shell, which is the evidence for shell structure.

6. First ionisation energy across a period 2D · 1.3

Click any element to see why its first ionisation energy sits where it does, using the three competing factors: nuclear charge, shielding and distance, and spin-pair repulsion. The two dips (group 2 to 13, group 15 to 16) are the whole reason this topic is worth teaching carefully.

7. Particle beams in an electric field 3D · 1.1

Fire protons, neutrons and electrons at the same speed between two charged plates. Neutrons pass straight through, protons bend toward the negative plate, and electrons bend the opposite way and far more sharply because their mass is tiny. This is the syllabus experiment for showing charge and mass.

8. Atomic and ionic radius 3D · 1.1

Compare sizes directly. Atoms shrink across a period as nuclear charge pulls the same shell in tighter, and grow down a group as shells are added. Positive ions are smaller than their atom, negative ions are larger. Spheres are drawn to scale with each other.

Built for AS Level Chemistry 9701, Topic 1 Atomic Structure. Ionisation energy and radius values are standard reference figures rounded for teaching; shell filling above calcium is simplified to the Bohr convention. Drag rotates, wheel or pinch zooms.

About this lab: Atomic structure

Eight simulations: build atoms and ions in 3D, isotopes and relative atomic mass from a mass spectrum, s, p and d orbital shapes, the Aufbau order, successive and first ionisation energies, particle beams in a field, and atomic and ionic radius.

Atomic structure is a free, browser-based simulation for Cambridge International AS & A Level Chemistry 9701 (topic 1 Atomic structure). The same ideas are examined in Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620 (topic 2 Atoms, elements and compounds, topic 8 The Periodic Table). The course is assessed in Paper 1 (Multiple Choice (AS)), Paper 2 (AS Structured), Paper 3 (Advanced Practical), Paper 4 (A Level Structured), Paper 5 (Planning, Analysis, Evaluation). Syllabus for examination in 2025-2027. There are 8 tabs, each a self-contained experiment with its own controls and live readings, and nothing to install: it runs on a laptop, tablet or classroom projector.

  7. 7. Particle beams in an electric field. Fire protons, neutrons and electrons at the same speed between two charged plates.
  8. 8. Atomic and ionic radius. Compare sizes directly.
  9. The buttons at the end of the tab strip give the scene the whole window (Full screen, Hide controls) and, on a dark stage, a projector-friendly palette (Light scene). Many scenes also have drag handles: drag them to change the set-up directly.
