Plot a field line
Each line follows the compass needle from point to point, just as you would plot it with a compass in the lab. Lines move with the magnet.
Remember
The field direction at a point is the direction of the force on a N pole there. Field lines run from N to S outside the magnet, never cross, and are closest together where the field is strongest.
