Paper 3 practical skills · Tables

Tables that score every mark.

In 9702 Paper 3 the results table earns marks for its headings, for recording raw readings to the right precision, and for the significant figures of every calculated value. Practise each skill with fresh readings, find the mistakes in another student’s table, then test yourself in Exam mode.

How table marks are given

Column headings

Every column shows the quantity and its unit, as l / m or l (m). Calculated columns need the right unit too, such as T² / s².

Raw readings

All raw readings of a quantity have the same number of decimal places, matching the instrument: a metre rule to the nearest millimetre, a stopwatch to 0.01 s.

Calculated values

Every calculated value is correct for its row. Check one row again on your calculator before moving on.

Significant figures

A calculated value has the same number of significant figures as the least precise raw reading used, or one more. A mean keeps the decimal places of the readings.

Range and number of readings

Six sets of readings spread evenly over the widest range the apparatus allows.

Habits that save marks

The marking follows the conventions in published Cambridge mark schemes. The experiments, readings and wording on this page are our own.
