Paper 5 · Planning

Plan it like an examiner wants.

Question 1 of 9702 Paper 5 asks you to plan an experiment to test a relationship. The marks come in predictable groups: the variables, how you measure each quantity, how you analyse the results with a straight-line graph, safety, and extra detail. Practise each group on a bank of experiments, then put a whole method in order.

How planning marks are given

Defining the problem

Name the independent variable, the dependent variable and the key control variables. Each is a separate mark.

Methods of data collection

A labelled diagram that would work, the instrument for every measured quantity, and how the independent variable is changed.

Method of analysis

What to plot to get a straight line, when the relationship is valid (for example a straight line through the origin), and how to find the constant from the gradient or intercept.

Safety

A precaution linked to a real hazard in this experiment, not general laboratory rules.

Additional detail

Specific details that improve accuracy, such as timing many oscillations, a fiducial marker, or checking a micrometer for zero error.

Habits that save marks

The marking follows the conventions in published Cambridge mark schemes. The experiments, readings and wording on this page are our own.
